General Assistance

A helping hand

 

 

General Assistance (GA) is a loan program to support the basic needs of San Joaquin County’s residents in need who are ineligible for other aid programs. Note that all assistance received under GA must be repaid.

Types of Assistance Provided:

  • Rent: Direct payments are made to the property owner or designated payee.
  • Personal Needs Voucher: Issued for purchasing hygiene products, household items, and food.
  • Travel Assistance: Available for those needing help to return to a former residence.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
  • A resident of San Joaquin County and at least 18 years old or married to someone 18 or older.
  • Employable recipients must actively search for work by completing a job search monthly.
  • Employable recipients are required to participate in a County-assigned Work Project site, with the work credited towards their GA payment.

Who might be eligible?

You must be a citizen of the US or legal resident.
You need to be a resident of San Joaquin County and 18 years of age or older. If under 18, you must be married to someone 18 or older

Requirements

Employable recipients are required to actively look for work by completing a job search monthly.
Employable recipients are required to work at a County assigned Work Project site which is credited towards their GA payment.

General Assistance Application Process

Application appointments are available on a first come first serve basis Monday-Friday.
GA clients are given a same day appointment.
Application packets are provided to applicants to complete before their interview.
The face to face interview is conducted and benefits may be issued the same day.

Documents to bring for your interview

Proof of your identity ( Driver's license , state identification card, birth certificate)
Social security card or document with the number on it
Parole card
Proof of citizenship
Proof of residency
Proof of income (wage stubs, unemployment , social security)
Proof of property (vehicle registration)
